Star Formation Histories in Early-type Galaxies
نویسنده
چکیده
I discuss the formation of α-enhanced metal-rich stellar populations in the nuclei of luminous ellipticals. Based on hierarchical clustering , different galaxy formation scenarios, which imply different star formation histories, are considered. In contrast to the fast clumpy collapse mode, the late merger of two spiral galaxies fails to reproduce significantly α-enhanced abundance ratios, unless the IMF is flattened. Following the star formation history predicted by semi-analytic models of hierarchical clustering for the average elliptical, solar abundance ratios are obtained with Salpeter IMF. According to the models, bright ellipticals in the field are expected to have significantly lower Mg/Fe ratios than their counterparts in a cluster.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملStar formation histories of resolved galaxies
The colour-magnitude diagrams of resolved stellar populations are the best tool to study the star formation histories of the host galactic regions. In this review the method to derive star formation histories by means of synthetic colour-magnitude diagrams is briefly outlined, and the results of its application to resolved galaxies of various morphological types are summarized. It is shown that...
متن کاملThe Ages, Metallicities and Star Formation Histories of Early-type Galaxies in Sdss
We use the spectra of ∼ 22, 000 early-type galaxies, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, to infer the ages, metallicities and star formation histories of these galaxies. We find clear evidence of ”downsizing”, i.e. galaxies with larger velocity dispersion have older stellar populations. In particular, most early-type galaxies with velocity dispersion exceeding 200 km s formed more than ...
متن کاملExtracting star formation histories from medium-resolution galaxy spectra
We adapt an existing data compression algorithm, MOPED, to the extraction of median-likelihood star formation histories from medium-resolution galaxy spectra. By focusing on the high-pass components of galaxy spectra, we minimize potential uncertainties arising from the spectro-photometric calibration and intrinsic attenuation by dust. We validate our approach using model high-pass spectra of g...
متن کاملThe Formation History of Early-Type Galaxies: An Observational Perspective
This talk investigates the formation of early-type galaxies from a deliberately observational view point. I begin by reviewing the conclusions that can be reached by comparing the detailed properties of galaxies in present-day clusters, focusing on the colour-magnitude relation in particular. The overriding picture is one of homogeneity, implying a remarkable uniformity in the formation of thes...
متن کاملProbing recent star formation with absorption-line strengths in hierarchical models and observations
Stellar population parameters (e.g. age, metallicity, and stellar abundance ratios) derived from spectral line-strengths provide a powerful probe of galaxy properties and formation histories. We implement the machinery for extracting line-strengths and ‘single-stellar-populationequivalent’ (SSP-equivalent) stellar population parameters from synthetic spectra generated by a hierarchical galaxy f...
